Forces that Shape Earth's Surface

This quarter we have began learning about the forces that shape our earth's surface. We have been using a new science textbook, The Solid Earth, in class.

We will be focusing on chapter 8, and we have already gone over our vocabulary words in class and students have looked up their definitions in their science section of their spiral.

They will not be able to take these books home, so it is very important that you remind your students to pay attention in class and are taking detailed notes.

Lesson One: How Rocks Form
Main Idea: The outermost layer of Earth is made up of rock. Over time, one kind of rock can be changed into another kind of rock.

Vocabulary Words:
core
crust
igneous rock
mantle
metamorphic rock
mineral
rock cycle
rock
sedimentary rock
sediment

Lesson Two: Rapid Changes to Earth's Surface
Main Idea: Earth's surface is constantly changing. some rapid changes are caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides.

Vocabulary Words:
lava
magma

Lesson Three: Slow Changes to Earth's Surface
Main Idea: Earth's surface is slowly built up and worn down. The processess of weathering, erosion, deposition, and mountain building change Earth's surface.

Vocabulary Words:
deposition
erosion
weathering
